So I’m coming up to my 2nd wedding anniversary this week, and no idea what to get my husband… We’ve been together coming up to 12 years, married for 2. There’s not a lot of surprises left.

I like the idea of the traditional wedding anniversary gifts, having a theme let’s me get a little creative with the gift. I’m not sure I can see myself following through with this tradition for the next 50 years – that’s a commitment – but for now I’m going to give it a go.

Traditional wedding anniversary gifts date back to the Holy Roman Empire when husbands crowned their wives with a silver wreath on their 25th anniversary, and gold on their 50th. And in the Commonwealth you can even get a letter from the Queen if you make it to your 60th wedding anniversary, 65th and 70th. Very fancy. You can also apply to the Governor-General on your 50th anniversary for a letter from the Prime Minister – not as exciting as the Queen, sorry Malcolm – but recognition all the same.

For reference I thought I would write this post as a quick go-to each year, I’ve included every year up to 10 years with a few creative ideas. I’ve then just spaced it out to the milestone anniversaries – these are pretty straight forward (if it’s gold, she wants gold as much gold as you can afford).

1st – Paper

Foreign money. Paper money from a country you’d like to travel to or even better a country you are planning to go together.

2nd – Cotton

Bunch of dried Cotton. Get your Dried Cotton from Sydney Flower Markets.
