Can you believe it’s only been a year!? I certainly can’t! But what a year it’s been. Happy 1st birthday Gladys! You’ve made it to the ripe old age of 1. So I thought I’d share some of the behind the scenes on Gladys Mack from the year that was. I’m not really sure where to start but I’m guessing the beginning would be good. (Derr)
In the first year of business there’s so many firsts.
13th September 2016 – And we’re open!
Fresh eyed and super excited, where was this journey going to take me? Who knows. All I knew was I wanted to build a brand from nothing to something and hope I could make a living a long the way. People were telling me I would be a millionaire in 12 months – I love their optimism – but I knew I was signing up for a long road of unknowns and I also knew that wasn’t going to happen. The motivation to start Gladys Mack wasn’t about making money. It was about really and honestly filling a gap that I thought there was in a market for beautiful gift hampers. I love packaging, I love products and I love giving gifts. It felt right!
22nd September 2016 – We sold our first gift box!
We sold our first gift box to someone we didn’t know! Aaaahhhmazing. You can imagine how excited small business owners are when this happens. It’s like a miracle has been cast down upon thee. Happy dancing for days.
4th November 2016 – Our first Corporate Christmas! OMG.
Our first really, really big corporate christmas order. Excited to say the least. And for a fantastic person and company. We couldn’t have asked for anything better from our client. This put me and the team to the test. And of course the courier company, suppliers and the processes we had set in place. It was a ride over the coming month to put it all together. We were challenged by really, really hot days but we made it in the end. We personally delivered the gift boxes going to local addresses to make sure they got there on time!
14th February 2017 – Valentine’s Posy Campaign
Yes, Valentines Day. It was a notable day for us. We ran a marketing campaign delivering 100 posies to random letterboxes! It was sooo much fun, aside from the rain. Our initial campaign was to hand out flower posies at the train station, but it was absolutely pouring! We couldn’t let these go to waste so we did a little letterbox drop. It was amazing the comments and messages we received on Facebook from people who had really had their day brightened! I remember one lady was out the front of her house when we were delivering in the street and she grabbed me and gave me a big hug and said, “that’s the nicest thing a company has ever done for me”. A memorable Gladys day.
14th May 2017 – Mother’s Day Giveaway
This was such a big success and I’m not measuring success by the number of people who entered the giveaway, we actually had more entries in our Valentine’s Day Giveaway. I’m measuring success by the kind words in the responses we received and the absolute love that shined through. It was a truly moving competition, you can read my post about it here.
21st – 23rd July 2017 – Photo Shoot Weekender
An amazing team of creative people, that I know and love, helped me to put together a successful series of photos that really depicted the fun, beautiful and meaningful gifts that Gladys Mack has to offer. Shot over a weekend we had multiple costume changes, over 20 something scenes to shoot and plenty of prosecco and cheese to go round. What a weekend! I’m looking forward to the next one so so much. It was a way to spend some quality time with people whilst letting our creative juices flow. I cannot thank them enough for their time and energy. Most of the photography over our site is done by Louise Wellington, check her out if you ever need photos for your business she’s a superstar.
27th July 2017 – The Studio is OPEN!
We packed our bags and relocated to Central Chambers on Crown Street Wollongong. Bright white walls and timber shelves as far as the eye can see. Oh to have such a big space all to ourselves! And I get to see and speak to customers ALL THE TIME. I love customer service, it’s the glue that sticks everything together in a business. When people visit the studio they don’t go away underwhelmed… well at least I hope not. They get the full service #sorrynotsorry I get a little bit excited about our products. They get to try just about everything in the studio because I run around chatting and insist on showing them everything I have on offer. From the housemade candles to the Herbivore Hibiscus Face Mist, yes, I say “close your eyes, oh wait are you allergic to anything, no good, ok here goes, isn’t it amazing, OMG” Its been a fantastic step to Gladys Mack and looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.
11th & 12th August 2017 – 9 to Thrive by Business Chicks
After trying a lot of different types of marketing over the past year this was one thing I hadn’t tried yet. A face to face event! I couldn’t think of any better place than an event ran by Business Chicks. It’s such a fabulous community of women. We made a huge amount of contacts and some now customers since the event. At one point I had so many people lining up to talk to me I had to do a full demonstration on the items in our Welcome Baby Luxe Gift Box to about 10 people at once – it was insane and I loved every minute of it. I’ve continued a lot of conversations from this event and building new relationships, thanks ladies.
Ok so it may sound like the past 12 months has just been a breeze. Well, not really. I’ve worked just about every day since starting Gladys and haven’t had a holiday other than a weekend here and there. I probably could take more time off, we have a long way to go and I want this business to really be something.
I spend a lot of time learning how to grow the business, implementing those strategies, speaking and meeting with as many people as I can, writing blog posts and developing content. I could go on. It’s funny I had dinner with my mother-in-law the other night, she asked me what I did when there were no customers in the studio to be honest I had no idea where to start to explain how much has to happen behind the scenes for an e-commerce business so I just brushed over the question. It’s definitely not a case of build it and they will come.
This year we did 597 Instagram photos, countless Facebook posts, 86 Blog posts, 20 something EDM’s, guest blogs, LinkedIn articles, 20-something directory listings, sending thank you notes and we could be doing more. It’s been a big year. And the one thing I’ve really learnt is how to be patient (well kinda, as patient as I can get I suppose).
Thanks so so so much to all our supporters over the past year, our customers, friends, family and just outright fans of Gladys who spread the word as often as they can. Here’s to the next 12 months I really wonder what’s going to happen, I’d love a crystal ball right now. xx
