Happiness is probably the one thing that every one of us desires most.

Many things we do every day, however, do not make us happy. What we need are habits that will encourage and reinforce good feelings within us. Here are a few habits, we can all adopt.

Hobbies: Doing something you enjoy can make you feel happier in an instant. Whether it’s reading a good book, watching a great movie or even pottering around in the garden. One sure thing that happy people do best is making time for themselves. At least once a week dedicate some ‘me time’; turn off the phone and spend some time doing things that make you happy.

Laughter: You’ve heard the saying; laughter is the best medicine. Well, it’s true. When you’re feeling low, a little laughter can go a long way. Watch a funny film, call up a friend who knows how to make you laugh, or even just laugh at yourself.

Sunlight: Have you ever noticed how you feel more gloomy in the winter when the days are short, and it’s dark and dull outside? Lighten your mood by getting some sunlight. Try and spend at least an hour a day outside in the sunshine, even if you have to go for a walk during your lunch break.

Exercise: If you’re feeling down then the last thing you’ll feel like doing is exercise, but it can be the perfect remedy to a bad mood. Physical activity gets the blood pumping so that you will feel ten times happier after a workout. If I’ve had a particularly bad day then I love to boxercise; punching and kicking motions are the perfect way to work off some steam!

Friends: Sometimes being alone when you are feeling depressed can make you feel much worse. When you spend time by yourself, you have too much time to think and over analyze the situation that made you feel depressed in the first place.

Reading: is the best way to learn just about anything. Whatever pops into your head, there is probably a book on it. It’s a good stress reliever. It feels great to have some time to yourself and sit back enjoying a great book. Reading is beautiful in the way that you leave your life and enter the life and world of someone else.

Giving/Good Deeds: This is the most important one. Nothing will make you feel better than helping someone else out. In case you’re not cheerful, you should do a good deed and make someone else’s life pleasant. Give that person a reason to smile again. Nothing in the world is better than a good, selfless deed.

Forgive: A lot of people are prideful and don’t want to cave in and just let things go. Life is so much more than one individual’s small problems. Just let it go. You can forgive but not forget. By holding on to problems, it’s only going to create problems. Just forgive and move on. Life is too short to have enemies.

Love: This goes directly with number 8. Just love. Not only people but everything. Life in general. Everyone needs love. We take it for granted. Saying it is one thing, showing it is another. Show people you care by helping them out and taking out some time just for them. That could make a world of difference.
